Alamogordo Optimists work with the American Cancer Society to build awareness of childhood cancer that kills more children than any other. Our support helps to find a cure and to support children with cancer and their families. In 2011 the Optimist Club of Alamogordo raised over $1000 for the treatment of Childhood Cancer and donated money for the medical expenses of childhood cancer survivor Julie Wolfe.
Alamogordo Optimists celebrate Youth Appreciation to recognize those youth in our community who have striven to better themselves and their community through their unique leadership and creativity.
Alamogordo Optimists provide this contest as an opportunity for young people who are deaf and hard of hearing to communicate in a public forum while developing valuable skills and confidence. The Optimist International Foundation annually funds a scholarship for higher education in each Optimist District.
The Oratorical Contest is Optimist International's oldest program. It allows young adults to gain experience in public speaking on an assigned topic. Alamogordo Optimists encourage local youth to participate in this program, and the winners advance to the District competition where the winners are awarded scholarships for higher education.
Each year the Alamogordo Optimists sponsor young golfers in this, one of junior golf's most restigious events. The Optimist International Junior Golf Championships provides a unique opportunity for junior golfers ages 10 to 18 to compete in local and District Optimist qualifying tournaments, with top finishers advancing to “The Optimist International Tournament.”
Through this contest, Alamogordo Optimists give young people a chance to write about their views and opinions. Each District winner receives a scholarship for higher education and advances to the international level where a first, second and third place winners are awarded a scholarship.
To encourage peace and harmony Alamogordo Optimists honor law enforcement officials, recognizing their work in our community.
Dolly Parton's Imagination Library mails one book per month to each enrolled child from the time of their birth until they enter kindergarten. The program was established by Dolly Parton in Sevier County, Tennessee but has now been replicated in 566 counties and provinces across thirty-six U.S. and United Kingdom. The program distributes more than 2.5 million free books to children annually.
The mission of New Mexico Friends of Foster Children (NMFFC or "Friends") is to improve the quality of life of abused and neglected children in foster care. NMFFC provides a variety of resources that enrich these children’s lives.
The Desert Light Film Festival gives New Mexico high school and middle school students a chance to promote their. The non-traditional area of Experimental Film is sponsored by the Alamogordo Optimist Club.
Each year the Alamogordo Optimist Club donates money to help make the holidays more joyful for those who have so little. This year (2011) the Club donated money to the Corinth Baptist Church for their Holiday Food Baskets.
The Alamogordo Optimist Club sponsors a Junior Optimist Club at Academy del Sol High School in Alamogordo. Members of the Junior Optimist Club participate in community activities with the Alamogordo Optimist Club and sponsor many activities that benefit their school.
